Library

The Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida houses a Lending Library of over 500 Holocaust-related books and over 100 films.  Most of these titles have been donated to the Holocaust Museum over the past several years, many by the authors themselves.

The Library is also home to memoirs and personal testimonies of several of our local survivors and liberators.  Please ask at the front desk about the stories of those living in our community.

There is a small section of books that do not circulate.  These titles have either been signed by the author or are considered research materials.  Visitors are welcome to stay in the Museum and use these materials at their leisure.

On-site browsing is encouraged for all visitors; however, borrowing is a privilege of membership. There is a $10 refundable deposit due at the time of sign-out.

Borrowing Guidelines:

  • Full name and telephone number printed on check-out card
  • Books may be taken out for up to THREE weeks
  • Videos and DVDs may be taken out for up to ONE week
  • A late fee of $1.00 per day will be assessed for late returns

Memoir of the Month
Book Cover Passport to Life

Passport to Life: Autobiographical Reflections on the Holocaust
By Emanuel Tanay, M.D.

“This is a book about a teenager’s struggle to stay alive in a culture of death.  It tells the story of a young adult who, after the ordeal of the Holocaust, lived a good life.  It ends with an old man who enjoys family, professional success, health and prosperity.  My life was worth living.  I became a physician, a professor of psychiatry, and have received many recognitions for my work; but none of it can compare with what I accomplished by the time I was 16 years old.”

Dr. Emanuel Tanay is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Medical School of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.  He is a well-known forensic psychiatrist who has been an expert witness in many famous cases; the Jack Ruby case, the Ted Bundy case, the Sam Shepard case and the Robert Garwood case.

Dr. Tanay will be sharing his story on Sunday, February 8, 2009 at the Norris Center in Naples.  The program will take place from 2:00 – 4:00 pm, to be followed by a Members cocktail party at the von Liebig Center from 4 – 5:30 pm.  Admission is free, but reservations are REQUIRED.

Please call the Holocaust Museum to reserve your seat: 239-263-9200.
