Education at the Holocaust Museum

The educational mission of the Holocaust Museum goes beyond the teaching of the Holocaust to connect us with our world today. Knowing about this watershed event from the past is essential to building a foundation for action in the present. Our educational programming always ends with connections to what has happened in the lifetime of the students and what they can do to make a difference. Respect for others begins with their family and community, then extends out to those in need around the world.

School Group Visits
The Museum is open to school groups free of charge. Because of the content of the Museum, on-site programming is recommended for grades 7 and up. Museum visits require approximately two hours and are designed for a maximum of 30 students. The following programs are offered during the school year at the Museum:

Stories of the Holocaust uses first person narrative and inquiry to connect students with the exhibit. After a 50-minute tour, students will work in groups to analyze primary sources.

Resistance and Rescue introduces students to people who risked their lives to stand up for what was right. Through a multi-media workshop, student will discuss what it means to fight injustice, both during the Holocaust and today.

Genocide in Our Lifetime exposes students to acts of genocide that have occurred since the Holocaust, with attention to the past 15 years. Using the museum tour and small group activities, students will discuss the role of individuals as well as the international community in these events.

General Museum tour with special speaker. This is a 50-minute museum tour coupled with a presentation by a Holocaust survivor or liberator.

Outreach Programs
The Museum offers outreach programming to Collier and Lee County Schools. Teachers are encouraged to contact the Education Department to discuss tailoring a program to best fit their grade level and class ability. Current outreach programs include:

The Holocaust: Causes and Consequences is a power point presentation, designed to give an overview of the Holocaust and its impact in the world, then and now.

People of the Holocaust is a PowerPoint presentation that looks at the Holocaust through the eyes of specific people.

Survivor or Liberator presentations. Several local Holocaust survivors and liberators generously offer to speak with students groups each year. The Museum will assist in making these arrangements.

We are requesting a $20 donation for outreach programs to help allay transportation costs.

Professional Development
The Museum conducts seminars for training teachers in Collier and Lee Counties designed to meet the Florida State Mandate for Holocaust Education.
